Smurfitt turned out to be a Premier League team too
far for a spirited Burham who went down 4-1 in their semi-final clash. The
score line flattered the winners and doesn't reflect the story of the match.
After only ten minutes Smurfitt's keeper brought down
Wes Enochs who was through on goal, a penalty was awarded
but the keeper remained on the pitch - not even seeing a yellow card. Skipper John Taylor stepped up but unusually
blazed wide of the goal. Burham kept up
the pressure for much of the first half although the aerial presence of the Smurfitt keeper thwarted most of their attacks. Against the run of play Lee Sturgeon broke
through the defense and rounded the on rushing Ollie Waite to make it 1-0. Towards the end of the first half Burham lost
John Taylor's dominance at the back when he had to go off with an ankle
injury. Not long into the second half
Liam McCabe equalised with a high lob. The turning
point of the game came when Matt Nicholl was
clattered and to the amazement of both teams a foul was given against him. The
resulting free kick was finished off by Smurfitt to
make it 2-1. Although Burham felt hard done by they kept battling but were
being opened up more and more by the Smurfitt
forwards and it was a fantastic shot, worthy of a winning goal, that seemed to
settle the match.
Burham
sent more players forward to push for a come back but were finished off by the
fourth goal which was received by a player in a blatantly offside position. The
best side won on the day but Burham can be rightly proud of their efforts in
the cup this year.

Burham were without key players for their
third round Challenge Trophy tie with first division high fliers Boxley, who were hoping to maintain their unbeaten run.
Burham started the game brightly enough trying to play a passing game but it
was Boxleys Ben Malins who
beat the offside trap in the tenth minute and forced goalkeeper Ollie Waite
into a good save. The game continued as a midfield battle with neither team
creating any openings.
Boxley were forced into changes at the break, with Jim Dixon and Karl Malins forced to withdraw from the action. Shortly after
the break a long throw from Callum Rigelsford, drafted in from Burhams
reserve team, was glanced in between the keeper and front post by Wes Enoch's,
after a deflection by Boxley defender Gavin Moore.
The match continued much as before with Burham trying to push for a second goal
but the Boxley defence stood firm. As the match
reached the final fifteen minutes it was Boxley who
began to put pressure on the Burham defence, but they failed to produce the
scoring form that they had showed in previous weeks. It wasn’t until the final
couple of minutes that Burham secured the match. With Boxley
committing more players forward a clearance from defence found Wes Enochs out on the right to put a perfect cross in to Tom
Rogers, who was unmarked in the penalty area to slot home and make it 2-0 to
Burham
